Each of my paintings is a process of discovery. I typically begin with a gesture – a simple drawing using perhaps only a few lines, but filling the canvas in a pleasing way. From there other lines, then shapes and color are introduced. This typically goes through many iterations – the previous painting being erased or partly erased and replaced with a new one. During this process, I have my eye out for interesting lines and shapes. I am inspired by organic and geologic shapes and lines found in nature. I am intrigued by ambiguities and suggestions of resemblance, and by the relationships, conversations or rhythms between shapes. The negative space (the space behind shapes) is as important to me as the shapes themselves. Ultimately the whole painting needs to feel like a unified whole.
